00:00:00.001 --> 00:00:02.539
A group contacts my wife
2
00:00:02.571 --> 00:00:06.188
and later on my wife
introduced me to them.
3
00:00:06.213 --> 00:00:09.391
They were called "Moral Rearmament"
4
00:00:09.681 --> 00:00:13.773
and I discovered that they were
an international organization
5
00:00:13.805 --> 00:00:15.968
speaking of peace and change.
6
00:00:15.993 --> 00:00:20.836
I used to go with a gun hidden
under my pant, here, you know
7
00:00:20.861 --> 00:00:24.755
and two bodyguards
waiting for me outside.
8
00:00:25.045 --> 00:00:30.640
And this is where I was saying
that for the first time I heard
9
00:00:30.665 --> 00:00:37.203
in the midst of the civil war
people speaking of peace,
10
00:00:37.394 --> 00:00:43.892
the spiritual peace
rather than the technical peace.
11
00:00:44.578 --> 00:00:47.686
They started asking me
12
00:00:47.942 --> 00:00:51.478
some questions that I found
bizarre at the beginning, like
13
00:00:51.707 --> 00:00:56.399
"you wanna change
everybody to resemble to you
14
00:00:56.908 --> 00:00:59.572
and to look like you
and to think like you
15
00:00:59.597 --> 00:01:03.095
but are you ready to change
the things in you ?
16
00:01:03.120 --> 00:01:07.025
Who said that you are perfect and
that everybody should be like you ?"
17
00:01:07.050 --> 00:01:10.352
Well I thought back then
that I was perfect you know.
18
00:01:11.900 --> 00:01:13.704
And this is ridiculous !
19
00:01:13.729 --> 00:01:17.439
But anyhow, so they said: " okay,
20
00:01:17.596 --> 00:01:21.025
you are free to think of yourself
what you are, what you want.
21
00:01:21.050 --> 00:01:23.486
We don't want to influence you
22
00:01:23.511 --> 00:01:29.329
but we suggest that you compare
your life to four moral values,
23
00:01:30.030 --> 00:01:32.696
and see where you stand".
24
00:01:32.721 --> 00:01:36.900
And these values were, as I said, four,
25
00:01:37.426 --> 00:01:45.051
which were honesty to
yourself, to the other,
26
00:01:45.076 --> 00:01:48.385
towards others and towards
God if you are a believer.
27
00:01:48.457 --> 00:01:53.379
The second one would be
purity, not only purity of flesh
28
00:01:53.404 --> 00:01:57.118
but also purity of your intentions,
29
00:01:57.143 --> 00:02:00.425
not sexual intentions
but intentions in general.
30
00:02:00.432 --> 00:02:03.399
I mean, do I deal with
you because
31
00:02:03.424 --> 00:02:06.360
I need something
from a relative of yours
32
00:02:06.385 --> 00:02:11.488
or because you're a human being
and I want both of us to communicate
33
00:02:11.513 --> 00:02:15.136
and benefit
from this relation.
34
00:02:15.186 --> 00:02:20.617
Then unselfishness the third criteria.
35
00:02:20.810 --> 00:02:25.371
And the fourth one which
is the most important one.
36
00:02:25.396 --> 00:02:31.485
And I think that it envelops
the first three, which is love.
37
00:02:31.510 --> 00:02:37.548
I did not think back then that I had
problems with any of those criteria
38
00:02:37.766 --> 00:02:43.600
until they suggested that I take
quiet times on a daily basis
39
00:02:43.741 --> 00:02:47.694
during which I would analyze
40
00:02:47.719 --> 00:02:53.701
or compare the way I'm living
or the situation I am in
41
00:02:55.134 --> 00:02:58.014
to these four moral values.
42
00:02:58.039 --> 00:03:05.600
And when I finish just
try to be ready to listen
43
00:03:05.695 --> 00:03:08.426
to what God may have to tell me.
44
00:03:08.451 --> 00:03:10.293
Of course not directly.
45
00:03:10.318 --> 00:03:13.693
I don't hear,
I never heard voices, apart from
46
00:03:13.718 --> 00:03:16.310
my son: " Assaad, you
should do this and that !"
47
00:03:16.335 --> 00:03:22.982
But it's a kind of antenna
that is directed
48
00:03:23.031 --> 00:03:27.943
towards the Creator and trying to guess
49
00:03:28.442 --> 00:03:31.473
what He has to say,
and you can know
50
00:03:31.498 --> 00:03:36.910
if it's coming from your head
or from, between brackets,
51
00:03:36.935 --> 00:03:43.840
"demon" or if it's coming from Him.
52
00:03:44.645 --> 00:03:47.198
All along my life until today
53
00:03:47.223 --> 00:03:51.473
sometimes I heard some
difficult things that I had
54
00:03:51.621 --> 00:03:54.723
or understood that I had
a lot of difficult things
55
00:03:54.723 --> 00:03:58.192
that I had to achieve
in my life, tough things,
56
00:03:58.363 --> 00:04:02.447
and these things I postponed
and postponed and run away from
57
00:04:03.621 --> 00:04:07.080
until I was convinced
that no there's no way
58
00:04:07.666 --> 00:04:11.900
to have a better path
to become a better person
59
00:04:11.925 --> 00:04:14.199
or to have a better world unless
60
00:04:14.224 --> 00:04:18.025
I went through these
difficult experiences.
61
00:04:18.831 --> 00:04:22.721
One of these experiences
was the decision that
62
00:04:22.858 --> 00:04:26.261
I had to look in the mirror
63
00:04:26.288 --> 00:04:31.614
and when I looked into this mirror
of myself I saw an ugly person.
64
00:04:31.639 --> 00:04:35.572
I almost did not recognize myself.
65
00:04:35.864 --> 00:04:39.537
You know I had done terrible things
66
00:04:39.690 --> 00:04:45.347
not only because of my wartime
activities but also on a personal level
67
00:04:45.830 --> 00:04:52.367
the way I dealt with people my ego,
a lot of sins, a lot of sayings
68
00:04:52.408 --> 00:04:55.886
and also on a national level.
69
00:04:55.911 --> 00:05:01.873
I mean the way I had lived
this war and what I had done
70
00:05:03.436 --> 00:05:06.433
during the war.
71
00:05:07.092 --> 00:05:13.094
So, I started this
long process of change.
72
00:05:13.625 --> 00:05:19.199
Of course a lot of bitterness,
a lot of shame,
73
00:05:19.224 --> 00:05:26.265
a lot of wanting to isolate
myself not to deal with anybody,
74
00:05:26.298 --> 00:05:29.441
wanting to run away
maybe from myself
75
00:05:29.820 --> 00:05:35.411
but I knew that this was the only
way to save what was left of me
76
00:05:36.085 --> 00:05:41.559
and to try to redeem
and repair what I had to,
77
00:05:42.313 --> 00:05:47.833
my mistakes, my sins,
my crimes, the whole set.
78
00:05:48.643 --> 00:05:52.934
So I started then, did not finish yet,
79
00:05:53.574 --> 00:05:56.273
along this path.
