They then can justify setting up systems of protection and surveillance to protect ‘us’ against ‘them’. And then they can justify putting ‘them’ in detention centres where they are treated unmercifully. The ‘us’ and ‘them’ language is being used to justify taking care of ‘ourselves’ and disregarding the rights of ‘others’.
