00:00:00.320 --> 00:00:04.080
When we have resentment,
and I'm not talking about the

2
00:00:04.146 --> 00:00:07.199
word resentment the way many
philosophers do which is

3
00:00:07.639 --> 00:00:10.769
what resentment of the short run
is a sign of self-respect.

4
00:00:10.836 --> 00:00:11.819
You can't do that to me.

5
00:00:11.886 --> 00:00:13.320
I won't stand for that.

6
00:00:13.500 --> 00:00:15.410
But then you
move on from that.

7
00:00:15.476 --> 00:00:20.129
So the short term moral
righteous indignation can

8
00:00:20.196 --> 00:00:22.739
be called resentment,
but psychologists when they use

9
00:00:22.806 --> 00:00:25.859
the word resentment they mean
deep unhealthy anger that

10
00:00:25.926 --> 00:00:28.019
abides over a long period of time.

11
00:00:28.800 --> 00:00:33.150
And when you have that
kind of resentment it's almost

12
00:00:33.216 --> 00:00:37.960
impossible to just leave that
as a void and walk away from it.

13
00:00:38.189 --> 00:00:43.359
Because you know resentment is
not a very friendly neighbor.

14
00:00:43.530 --> 00:00:48.229
Once it's inside of us
it's hard to ask it to leave.

15
00:00:48.296 --> 00:00:50.910
I have known people
who have held onto resentment

16
00:00:50.976 --> 00:00:55.769
for 40, 50, 60 years and they
would be close to dying with it

17
00:00:55.836 --> 00:00:57.420
if they didn't practice forgiveness.

18
00:00:57.486 --> 00:01:01.229
The only thing I know of on
this planet that can actually

19
00:01:01.296 --> 00:01:05.260
get rid of resentment when
we're talking this deep kind

20
00:01:05.326 --> 00:01:07.920
that psychologists talk
about is forgiveness.

21
00:01:07.986 --> 00:01:11.129
I think it's the only medicine
that can cure us

22
00:01:11.459 --> 00:01:13.469
from a resentment
that could kill us.
